Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS

Em sorprèn de matinada un correu electrònic a la llista d’anuncis d’Ubuntu:

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, the first maintenance update to Ubuntu’s 8.04 LTS release.

In all, over 200 updates have been integrated, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Sembla que alguna cosa se’ls hi va escapar al tancar la Ubuntu 8.04 que ha provocat l’aparició d’aquesta release.

Debian super estable?

Doncs depen dels paquets que utilitzis…

Resulta que si avui actualitzaves el paquet oficial i estable de lighttpd i passaves d’una 1.4.13-4etch6 a una 1.4.13-4etch7 i tenies configurat el SSL del servidor web, la CPU del teu servidor web començava a suar, el lighttpd començava a llençar errors i a castigar el disc a l’escriure el log d’errors:
(connections.c.1649) SSL: 5 error:00000000:lib(0):func(0):reason(0)

En el meu cas fins a generar un petit error.log com segueix:
rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 3442028544 2008-04-08 17:09 error.log

Un altre motiu per migrar ASAP el servidor cap a una Ubuntu Server.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Beta Release

Codenamed “Hardy Heron”, 8.04 LTS continues Ubuntu’s proud tradition of integrating the latest and reatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition features incremental improvements to familiar applications, with an emphasis on stability for this second Ubuntu long-term support release, and is easier than ever to try out with the new Wubi installer.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server follows in the footsteps of Ubuntu 7.10 with even more virtualization support and security enhancements – enabling AppArmor for more applications by default, improving protection of kernel memory against attacks, and supporting KVM and iSCSI technologies out of the box.

The Ubuntu 8.04 family of variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, UbuntuStudio, and Mythbuntu, also reach beta status today.

Ubuntu Mobile

La gent de Canonical ha presentat Ubuntu Mobile, un sistema operatiu destinat a dispositius mòbils que competirà, entenc, amb el Android de Google.

Ubuntu Mobile, a fully open source project, gives full Internet, with no compromise. Custom options may include licensed codecs and popular third-party applications.

A veure quan evolucionen aquests nous sistemes i deixen de ser juguets per les fires de telefonia 😉

Dell finalment sí preinstal·larà Linux

Després de forces ara sí, ara no, sembla que Dell podria començar a distribuir estacions de treball i portàtils amb Linux presinstal·lat.

Dell contacted DesktopLinux.com on March 28 to let us know that the company will be releasing select desktop and notebook systems with pre-installed Linux as an option in the coming weeks.
